The Pickens County YMCA is a community non-profit (501c3) company that serves
the local community through membership and programs. The ‘Y’ receives no government
funding nor is it governed by the community. The PC YMCA is governed by a local
Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has full authority to executive all decisions
regarding policies, financial obligations, supervision of the CEO, and the future
happenings of the YMCA. Board Members serve a 3 year term but are eligible to
serve again after one year. All board members are full volunteers and receive
no compensation or benefits for their service to the YMCA.
The names and contact information of the BOD are not published on the website.
A request for the current list of Board Members can be made by contacting the
CEO. The Pickens County Y BOD requests all matters regarding the YMCA be brought
to the staff and/or CEO. In certain cases, situations can be brought to the BOD.
These situations and processes are defined in the Grievance Policy. The logic behind this policy is based upon the philosophy of governing the
YMCA. Day-to-day issues, program decisions, facilities and interpretation of
policy are the decisions of the CEO.
The BOD serve primarily as a policy making body. They also approve the vision
of the YMCA, financial debts and supervision of the CEO. Board Members serve
the YMCA by offering their ‘4-W’s’.
Work – Serving on the BOD requires work. Whether its manual labor, writing letters,
making phone calls, planning events or researching policies. Work must be performed
by the members.
Wealth – Financial contributions to the YMCA is a requirement to serve as a Board Member.
The amount is not specified. Board Members are also asked to raise funds in the
community for the Annual Sustaining Campaign. Soliciting funds is something that
all Board Members and staff do in serve of the YMCA.
Witness – Sharing with the community, friends, and family about the YMCA and its impact
on the community is an important factor of being a great board member.
Wisdom – When the YMCA needs to make important decisions, the collective experience
of the Board Members are critical in making wise decisions.
