What it means to work at the YMCA....

I want to share how the YMCA has had a positive impact on my life.  I’ve been a member of the Pickens YMCA for about 10 years and a member of the Group Wellness staff for most of that time.

To get ideas for my classes at the YMCA, I occasionally visit a new facility and attend a class by an instructor that I don’t know.  No matter where I go, there is no place like the YMCA.  At the YMCA, new members are greeted with smiles and handshakes from staff and from our members.  At the YMCA, our members encourage each other, not only in meeting exercise goals, but in conquering sickness, difficulties in family life, finding a job, etc.  Our members reach out to help each other and to get to know each other and I am proud to be a part of that experience.

I call myself a “teacher” at the YMCA since I offer instruction in Group Fitness.  In my time at the YMCA, I have also learned many life lessons from my class participants:

1 – Stop making excuses.  If you really want to achieve a goal, just get off your backside and go after it.
2 – When your neighbor is down, help him up.  Everyone needs a hand now and then.
3 – Do your part.  Volunteers and donors are a huge part of the YMCA’s success.  We all have something we can give.
4 – Be sincere. Be genuine.
5 – Celebrate successes.   Celebrate the successes of others even more.
6 – Try as hard as you can.
7– Try something new now and then.  If you like it, convince someone else to try it.
8 – Welcome those who are different than you.  You might learn something really cool from them.
9 – Being competitive is healthy and fun, especially if you can…
10 – Laugh. Laugh at yourself.  Laugh at others who are laughing at you. Just laugh a lot.

There is no way for me to convey what the YMCA means to me. Working here is much more than a job. The YMCA is my mission. I truly feel that God has blessed me by placing me in this YMCA and giving me the opportunity to spread His word and love to so many children and families in our community.

As I look back over my life, I see the YMCA as an integral part of the person I am today. My hope is each child we serve can look back and feel the same way.

The YMCA is a safe place for each child to grow, make new friends and experience exciting things.  Feeling safe and secure, they will be able to grow in spirit, mind and body. Today, I am thankful that I can be a part of their childhood memories.
