History of the Pickens County YMCA
August 9 th, 1957 - Five local community leaders met and nominated 24 board members, including themselves.  All 24 agreed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Pickens County YMCA.
 
August 20 th, 1957 - The Pickens County YMCA received its provisional charter from the Interstate Committee of the Carolinas of the Young Men’s Christian Association.
 
February 20 th, 1959 - Mr. E.S. McKissick donated 7 acres of land from the Burns Estate.  The YMCA Board of Directors accepted the donation and constructed the Easley facility on the land.  The original building is still in use.
 
October 1 st, 1960 - The first General Secretary (CEO) was hired at an annual salary of $6000/year. 
 
November 22 nd, 1960 – The Pickens County YMCA officially received its National Charter from the Interstate Committee of the Carolinas of the Young Men’s Christian Association.

June 17 th, 1961 - The Easley YMCA Pool held its Grand Opening.
 
November 5 th, 1961 - The building that was constructed on the Burns Estate was opened at 3pm for the first time.
 
 
 
Interesting Items:
*July 30 th – August 11 th, 1962, the first Summer Day Camp was offered.  For the two week session, the cost was $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
 
*The original membership rates for the Pickens County YMCA were $12/year for an adult and $6/year for students.  Discounts were given to additional family members.
 
*The 1961 Aquatic Programs consisted of Recreational/Family Swimming, Senior Lifesaving Classes, Basic Swim Lessons, Progressive Swim Lessons, and Swim Team.  The same programs are offered today!
