What does a membership at the Pickens County YMCA mean?

Our hope is that it is more than just a place to come and work out. We want it to be about the experience you have and the endless possibilities to be a part of something more than “just a gym”. Our YMCA has something to offer for all ages. At the Pickens County YMCA we strive to change lives by providing the tools for people to lead a healthier lifestyle and by offering a variety of classes and programs where you can meet new people who share the same interests. In 2001, Jeanne Sauls became a member of the Pickens CountyYMCA. Little did she know that being a member of the YMCA would become more than just a place to work out.Jeanne was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2007. Her doctor advised her to continue with her normal schedule and to stay as active as possible through the cancer treatments. Following what her doctor told her she found that her experience was positive compared to others.After her diagnosis, her routine at the YMCA became a warm up on an elliptical machine and then taking a Super Sculpt class. She did these three days a week. At first, she was a little hesitant in the class because somany of the participants were younger than her, but they quickly became a source of support for her. She has been recovering for 4 years now.

During her journey she was also encouraged by her husband to do whatever she needed to do. She also found that the rest of her family and her church were there to help her along the way.  Jeanne said, “It’s like a circle of support,and cancer can’t take away your spirit and faith.” Jeanne feels that if her story can help someone else,whether dealing with their own diagnoses or the diagnoses of a family or friend, then she welcomes the opportunity to share her experience with others.
