Swim Lesson Levels

Preschool Levels: Ages 3-5


Pike:
This is the beginning level of the Preschool classes. Swimmers will be introduced to basic swimming skills of floating, kicking, swimming on front and back, introduction to breathing, and confidence building. Focus is on becoming comfortable in and around the water. Swimmers wear a high level swimming aid.


Eel:
This is the second level of the Preschool classes and for those who have completed the Pike level. Swimmers will work towards swimming 10ft on front and back without assistance. Skills include: basic kicking, breathing, back floating front and back stroke, and self confidence. Swimmers wear a medium level swimming aid.


Ray:
This is the third level of the Preschool classes and for those who have completed the Eel level. Participants are comfortable swimming without assistance or a bubble 15ft on front and back. Skills include: Stroke and swim refinement, basic kicking, breathing, back floating, front floats, freestyle, backstroke, as well as finning on their back. Swimmers wear a low level swimming aid.

 

School Age Levels: Ages 5-12


Polliwog:
This is a beginning level for swimmers who are becoming comfortable in the water. Skills include: blow bubbles with their nose/mouth, submerging head, front/back float, freestyle (8 ft), backstroke (8 ft.).


Guppy:
This is the second level of Learn to Swim. Builds on skills learned in the Polliwog level. Skills include: bobs, front/back glide, freestyle with face in the water(15ft), backstroke (15ft), retrieving object from bottom, treading water, back floats, and front floats.


Minnow:
This is the third level of Learn to Swim. Builds on skills learned in the Guppies level. Skills include: Retrieving object from bottom (6ft depth), treading water (30 seconds), backstroke (15 yds), freestyle (15 yds), side breathing, finning, and sidestroke. (10 yrds).


Fish:
This is the fourth level of Learn to Swim. Builds on skills learned in the Minnows level. Skills include: touch bottom of deep end, treading water (30 sec), freestyle (25yds), side breathing, backstroke (25 yds), butterfly (15 yds), breaststroke (15 yds), sidestroke (25 yds), and rotary breathing.  Swimmers at this level are encouraged to join the Pickens County YMCA Piranhas swim team.
