  • The three drownings bring the total drownings deaths in Easley-area pools to seven over the last 12 months. Four of the victims have been children.

  • Drowning is a leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age.

  • Approximately 300 children under the age of 5 drown each year.

  • Nearly all of these children were being supervised by at least one parent.

  • For children aged 1 to 14, drowning is the second-most common cause of accidental death.

  •  95% of pediatric drownings occur with children between the ages of 1 and 4.

  • A survey by the American Red Cross showed that almost half of the adults surveyed have had an experience where they nearly drowned, and 1 in 4 knew someone who drowned.

  • Over 90% of families with young children will be in the water at some point this summer, almost half plan to swim in a place with no lifeguard. 
  • A swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child age 4 and under.
  • Each year approximately 1150 children drown.
  • Each year approximately 5000 children ages 14 and under are hospitalized due to near-drownings.
  • Of children surviving near-drownings, 5-20% suffer severe and permanent disability.
  • Approximately 50% of preschooler drownings occur in residential swimming pools.
  • Of preschooler pool drownings, 65% occur in the child's home pool and 33% at the homes of friends, neighbors and relatives.
  • Each year, 350 drownings (of all ages) happen in bathtubs, and 40 children drown in five-gallon buckets. 
  • Of all preschoolers who drown, 75% are missing from sight for 5 minutes or less. 
  • Health care costs per near-drowning victims typically ranges from $75,000 for initial emergency room treatment to $180,000 a year for long-term care.
