Camp iRock

Closing the Achievement Gap with Camp iRock

Our YMCA has partnered with the Pickens County United Way and the School District of Pickens County to pilot a summer literacy learning loss prevention program for at-risk children. In the summer of 2015, approximately 96 rising 1st - 4th graders from five Easley area elementary schools will spend the summer engaging in exciting academic and enrichment activities at Camp iRock. Facilitated by certified teachers and trained counselors, the unique curriculum is designed to help close the achievement gap and prevent these at-risk children from falling behind over the summer months.

The 10 week program will run Monday-Friday,
8 am to 5:15 pm and will include,
at no cost to the children:
-Bus transportation
-Breakfast, lunch and snacks
-Swim lessons
-Field trips
-Music and arts
-Physical activity
-Nutrition and healthy living
-Character development
-Team building
-Reading

Certified teachers, YMCA camp counselors, a Site Coordinator, Call Me Mister interns, and volunteer mentors will provide a staff to student ration of 1:8 during educational time and 1:12 during enrichment and meal times. Student progress will be measured using the School District of Pickens County Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) test scores and a YMCA fitness instrument.
