Swim Lessons FAQ

INFORMATION FOR SUCCESS IN SWIM LESSONS

First Day Expectations
Please make sure your children come dressed and ready to get in the pool 5 minutes prior to the class start time. Check in with the Front Desk where they can direct you to the pool waiting area. You will be met by an Aquatics staff member to help guide you to your child’s class. The instructors will evaluate the participant’s swimming ability. If the participant needs to be moved up or down a level, the instructor will notify the Swim Lesson Coordinator to move the participant to the appropriate level.

May I observe my child’s class?
Yes! All parents are encouraged to watch the swim lessons, though we ask all parents to sit on the bleachers or chairs on the pool deck as this removes additional distractions. If your presence distracts your child, the instructor or deck supervisor may ask you to wait outside the pool area to maximize your child’s learning process and not interfere with the class. Parents may also wait in the lobby, but you cannot leave the YMCA premises during lessons.

We cannot attend class—can we schedule a make-up lesson?
There are no make-ups for missed classes whether your child is sick, out of town or unable to attend. Your child may not attend a class at another time slot in place of a missed class as there are guidelines for a safe instructor:participant ratio.

What happens if the pool closes due to weather?
If there is thunder or lightning, the pool will be closed for thirty minutes from the last incidence. Make ups will be offered if time allows. Credits will not be issued for weather related cancellations.

How long will it take my child to learn to swim?
Children progress at their own speed, and it is common for a swimmer to remain at the same level for a complete year of classes before advancing. A child’s self esteem, confidence, and strength development are all important aspects in determining progression to the next level.

How will I know if my child is progressing?
Real time skill progression is tracked in our new parent communication tool, SwimWins. This will provide you with daily progress reports, instructor notes, mastery of skills and end of class certificates. The free SwimWins mobile app is the perfect tool that’s accessible from any mobile device. To download, search “PlayerSpace Mobile” in the app store.
