Christine Economou began mentoring Makayla Harvey in 2016, when Makayla was a freshman in high school navigating a chaotic home life and searching for stability. During a time of overwhelming uncertainty, Christine became a consistent presence in her life, offering encouragement and guidance as someone who truly believed in Makayla’s potential. College was a dream Makayla wasn’t sure she could reach. No one in her family had ever gone. But Christine encouraged her to pursue it anyway, knowing the doors it could open and the opportunities it could bring.
Through countless conversations and moments of reassurance, Christine helped Makayla see a future beyond her present circumstances. With Christine’s guidance and support, Makayla pushed through challenges both in and out of the classroom. She stayed focused and set goals for herself. Makayla became the first in her family to graduate college and is now making an impact of her own as a 7th and 8th grade math teacher, shaping young lives just as she once was.
Reflecting on Makayla’s journey, Christine shared, “Makayla has risen above unhealthy relationships, drama, etc., as the first in her family to graduate college. I’m so proud of her.” Christine also emphasized the importance of the YMCA Mentor Program, saying, “The best way to make a difference in the future is to invest in someone today.”
For Makayla, having someone who believed in her made all of the difference. “Christine introduced me to new opportunities and helped me realize I could do hard things,” Makayla shared. “I’m so grateful for her guidance.” This mentor and mentee relationship is a powerful reminder that when someone shows up, lives can change.
