Eight years ago, Lynn Howe was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a life-altering moment that changed everything. With her family living far away, the journey felt especially isolating. The months that followed were filled with physical and emotional challenges as Lynn lost a significant amount of weight and endured multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. It was a long, exhausting road and one that felt lonely.
Even after the treatment, the weight of the diagnosis never fully disappeared. Her doctor once told her, “You’ll always be looking over your shoulder for it to come back.” Those words stayed with her, a reminder of the uncertainty she continues to live with.
In the midst of it all, Lynn found something she didn’t expect at the YMCA. What began as a place to move her body became a source of encouragement and connection. Through the LIVESTRONG class at the YMCA, Lynn found a group of ladies who helped push her forward, even on the hard days. “The YMCA brought me a group of women who encourage me to keep going,” she said. “It’s allowed me to rock and roll.”
More than just exercise, the class has become a place of joy. There is laughter and a shared understanding that keeps Lynn coming back. “There’s a lot of laughter in the class, and I’m so happy to be a part of it,” she shared. For Lynn, the YMCA is more than a gym. It’s a community that helped her find connection after loneliness.
